Fellow cyclist run down on Marine Drive in Umhlunga on
Saturday 4th July 2015.
To all my fellow cyclists: this is reminder to remain
vigilant whilst on the roads doing your morning exercise. A driver in a white
BMW 135i with GP number plates raced up and down Marine drive in early hours of
Saturday morning with two passengers. The BMW (visible on CCTV footage), played
“chicken” with the fellow cyclist. Fortunately the cyclist was able to avoid
the vehicle…the first time. The driver continued to race up and down the road until
he approached the cyclist again. He drove alongside the cyclists swearing and
threatening him until he finally rear ended the cyclist causing him to fall to
the ground, sustaining injuries. A driver driving a blue bakkie witnessed the
incident and approached the scene to which the driver of the BMW fled.
The injured cyclist was on his way home from the incident and
spotted the BMW pulling into a driveway in Marine Drive and once the cyclist
was spotted the driver fled once again, not realising he had breached his own
location. Once the driver of the BMW returned to his base, photographs were
taken of his vehicle and number plates. The evidence with CCTV footage was
handed over to the men in blue. The number plates came back as un-registered
and the license disc had been removed. The VIN number was documented and reported
with feedback as to who the owner of the vehicle is. Further action from our
men in blue as well as the law is underway against the driver of the BMW as
well as his two apprentices.
A big thanks to the driver of the blue bakkie, the security
guard who witnessed the incident and the company for the CCTV footage.
