Police wife found body under bed

A 44-year-old Free State police sergeant was arrested after his wife found a woman's body under his bed while he was sleeping, police said on Tuesday. Sergeant Mmako Mophiring said the alarm was raised by the couple's nine-year-old daughter. She phoned her mother at work after her father refused to let her into his room, where she had seen a human leg protruding from beneath the bed. The woman arrived home at 6.45pm Monday, immediately went to investigate and found the body of a naked woman underneath the bed on which her husband was sleeping. The policeman woke up, became angry and told his wife to fetch a box of matches from the kitchen, said Mophiring. The woman ran to her neighbours, off-duty police officers, who arrived to find the partially clothed body of a woman on the dining room floor. Phuthaditjhaba police and Independent Complaints Directorate officials attended the scene. Mophiring said the sergeant was arrested. He said a post mortem would be conducted to determine the woman's cause of death. Her identity was not known. The policeman was expected to appear in the Phuthaditjhaba Magistrate's Court on Wednesday on charges of alleged murder and rape.
