I reacted to an advertisement on OLX about a new Canon 5D MK II camera being sold by an online camera shop African Camera Safaris(email@example.com) in Pietermaritzburg (+27 (31) 813 5348) for R14 750. Everything looks legitimate and they undertook to send the camera via FedEx courier services. FedEx did not know anything of it and their name was illegally used by this individual. The next e mail informed me that camera was sent via the UK and a fake courier Delivery Link Express Courier Services (firstname.lastname@example.org) (+44 1228 830297) to Oliver Tambo International Airport. I have to pay an additional R4 100 to have it released by customs. I phoned Oliver Tambo International Airport and the Fraud Department advised me not to go ahead as it is a scam. We blocked the 2 individuals’ account via ABSA and CAPITECBANK and reported it to the Police (CAS30/62016), OLX and FedEx. I am concerned about any further innocent people that may be lured into this scam. I also reported it to the online website of the UK Police as they have UK addresses and they may be an International Group with ties in the UK and South Africa. They have agents in every part of South Africa who place advertisements on the websites and they receive 5% commission on very sale. I am concerned about the slow pace the Banks and the Police are moving and that these offenders may get away. They are arrogant on the internet and use a poor English. I therefore suspect, by the manner they speak and the poor English, that they are from West African-Nigerian origin and that they are not South Africans. I will get a subpoena from the Police on 6/06/2016 and send it to OLX to get more information from the individual(s).Your help will be appreciated to root out crime in our beloved country.
