A 20-year-old pupil has been fatally stabbed by a classmate, allegedly after he accused the victim and his friends of stealing his cellphone and R10.
Nkosinathi Phosa, a pupil at Mbelebele High School in Umlazi Q Section, was sitting in the classroom when the 17-year-old suspect allegedly stood up and repeatedly stabbed him in his chest in full view of his teacher and classmates.
The death happened on Wednesday, said Mlungisi Ntombela, the Umlazi Education district director.
Speaking about the events which led to the incident, Ntombela said the suspect had allegedly been approached by Phosa and his group of friends, who are not school pupils.
The group, allegedly under the instruction of Phosa, is said to have robbed the suspect of his cellphone and money, outside the school.
The enraged pupil allegedly went home to fetch a knife.
"He then went into the classroom, sat down for a while before stabbing Nkosinathi four times, causing teachers and pupils to flee for their lives," he said.
The suspect was arrested at school while Phosa was rushed to Prince Mshiyeni Hospital, where he later died.
In a separate incident, a school security guard was seriously wounded after he was stabbed, allegedly by a pupil.
The guard at Newtown High School in Pietermaritzburg was trying to quell a brawl between two pupils when he was stabbed.
Two pupils, both aged 23, had been arrested on Thursday and charged with assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, said police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane. The guard was in a stable but critical condition. The pupils are expected to appear at the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate's Court next week.
The KZN MEC for transport, community safety and liaison, Willies Mchunu, reacted with shock at the news. "Violence among teenagers is alarming. As the government, we will integrate all our programmes with concerned departments aimed at addressing this challenge and further implement mechanisms of rehabilitating the troublesome youth in our province," he said.
