I was planning a wedding, and because we didn't have a lot of money we looked on Gumtree for furniture. We saw an ad for a fridge we liked for R2000 and contacted the seller. He informed me that he was selling the fridge because he wanted to get a freestanding fridge and freezer. He also said that he only had the fridge for a year and a bit. We went to view the fridge on the 23rd August and liked it. He said that we'd have to pay straight away to ensure that we get it and that we'd have to take it then because he needs the space for his new fridge. We, not wanting to miss out on a good deal, paid for the fridge and asked him to deliver it to a family member nearby. He said that because it was late he forgot the papers and would give it to us again.
We were very happy with our fridge until it stopped being cold on Sunday. We had a repairman come in and check if he could tell us what was wrong with it. The repairman told us that the fridge was repaired previously and that it could not be fixed. I had not saved the mans details but remembered where he stayed so checked for his details under his address. I looked up his address on google maps and imagine my surprise when the picture of his house has him standing outside with fridges. We then checked on Gumtree and discovered that he was selling more fridges and had an ad offering to buy broken fridges and a different ad offering his services to fix broken fridges.
I contacted him yesterday, from the contact number on the Gumtree ad for a fridge, and informed him that our fridge was broken. He said that he wouldn't give our money back because we've had it for a month and there's nothing he can do about it.
Is there something we can do about it or have we just been scammed out of R2000. How can we stop him from doing this to other people. Please help.
Yours Sincerely,Merlyn Manuel079 883 6138
