13 hurt as taxi hits light pole

A 6-month-old baby was among 13 people injured in a minibus taxi accident in Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday, paramedics said.

A taxi lost control on Zwartkop road near Beverly road at around 09:30 on Tuesday, Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeffrey Wicks said.

"The taxi was travelling up Zwartkop road when it lost control going around a corner and hit a light pole, completely ripping it out of the ground.

"The taxi is lying on its side, completely damaged. It looks like it may have rolled," he said.

Paramedics were on the scene at treating the injured, four of whom were in serious conditions.

They will be taken to Northdale and Edendale hospitals, Wicks said.

The driver of the taxi claimed he had swerved to miss another car, however a witness told paramedics there was no other vehicle involved.
