The driver of the bus involved in Wednesday's horrific crash that left
23 people dead on the N1 highway between De Doorns and Touws River in
the Western Cape will appear in court on Thursday, police said.
Captain Federick van Wyk said the driver was arrested and charged with culpable homicide after he received treatment at Worcester hospital on Wednesday afternoon.
"He was taken back to the hospital (on Thursday) at 8am for counselling. Then after that he will appear at the Touws River Periodical Court."
Van Wyk said the death toll had not gone up to 28 as it was earlier reported.
He said 19 people and three children died on the scene and one adult died on the way to hospital.
At least 15 people were in a serious condition in hospital.
The accident occurred when the driver apparently lost control of the vehicle causing it to overturn.
The bus was on its way to Cape Town carrying 78 passengers, instead of the 64 its certified to carry, when the accident occurred, Van Wyk said.
