The scam is over 5  years old - I read about it - I knew about it - nothing prepares you for that phone call though.

I got a call from my domestic worker's son saying that his mother has been killed in a taxi accident and he is at the scene and needs R6000.00 to get the body back to Johannesburg.

The last thing I wanted to do was phone her on her cell phone to check that she was in fact dead.

I transferred the money into said bank account and fortunately for me there was a hold on the bank account - someone else had laid a charge of fraud.  First National Bank immediately reversed the money and the phone calls did not stop.

A warning to anyone getting a phone call from  072 427 2693 - do not respond to them.  It is a scam.

Hopefully RICA is going to sort out all the bad cell phones from February.

071 - 066 7739 also a number to watch out for with regard to this scam. Fortunately he didn't receive any monies from me. I also reported this to Southern African Fraud Prevention Service -register your ID with them to prevent yourself from becoming a victim of ID fraud. I have long since been registered with them to protect any usage of my ID number as these fraudster scheisters will unfortunately always be around, continually inventing fresh scams when it's game up on an older scam.

Hi,on December 24th 2010 my partner and I were also contacted by Joseph Mtsweni, cell number 0789665659. He gave the usual story and was also abusive when asked for more information. He said he was located at Mount Frere in the Eastern Cape and claimed he needed R6000. We called back on that number and pretended to play along, whereupon he gave a bank savings account number FNB 9255120004. He insisted repeatedly that we should do an internet transfer immediately, which of course we didn't. We are based in Cape Town and did report this to the police.

I had the same scam artist call me on 20th Nov 2010 from 078 966 5659. I told him that I need to speak to my husband about the money and will call back but this only frustrated him and he put the phone down. When I spoke to my domestic worker she told me that she had received a call the previous week from a guy who claimed to be from the Dept of Labour who asked her a series of questions including hers and her childrens ID numbers, luckily she didn't give them out. I called the Dept of Labour's Fraud Dept who said that nothing can be done unless something fraudulent had happened and that a claim on my DW's UIF can be made from the children/spouse or parent(on behalf of the children). They might have also been able to make a claim had my DW given one of her children's ID numbers...BE AWARE!

Same Scam, phoned on Tuesday 16th November and spoke to Domestic claiming to be a UIF Official and asked loads of questions. Phoned the employer on Sat to say she had been killed in an accident, also phoned her other employer and pulled the same stunt . The contact no was also 078 966 5659. We are wise to this and did not fall for it.

We just a similar call and phoned our domestic worker who was ok. However, the MO is slightly different now as the payment request is to Checkers Money Market / moneygram. The contact no was 078 966 5659.

I received a phone call at 0700 this morning (Sunday) to my landline from a man claiming to be the brother of my domestic worker. He told me she was killed in a car accident on her way to church the previous evening and asked for financial assistance. He gave me his cell number and asked me to call him back which I duly did. He sounded very vague and mumbled inaudibly (obviously trying to sound grief-stricken)and when I asked to speak to her husband he pretended to put him on the line but it was clearly the same voice!! I then grew suspicious and decided to call my domestic worker on her cell phone....which she answered! The scam caller then phoned me back to give me his ABSA banking details but hung up when I said I was talking to my domestic on my cellphone! The cell number he called from is 079 183 4634 - so beware of this scam!

Amazing - and we thought it was linked to one of our staff members as they posed as our domestic's son by name... We were phoned 15 May 2010 on our home landline. My husband had to go to a meeting so we said we would call him back afterwards. He got a little rude which made us upset so we proceeded to ask for a death certificate. He swore at us and put the phone down. Luckily we had not paid!!!!! (The story was that she had died in a taxi on the way to church in Tembisa and they needed to transort her body to Alex). We have traced his information...not sure how correct it is as they are obviously fraudsters to begin with. The phone is registered to Aldington Balingtulu in Kwamhlanga (NE of Pretoria) 860 Mountain Rd.

I am working for a major newspaper and was wondering if I could get into contact with any of you in order to let other South Africans know about this scam. If you could send me an E-mail with your phone number so that I can call you, that would be great as I would love to hear your side of the story. Thanks Kayleigh You can e-mail me at

Well done Jenni - clever counterpart ... !! You should have played along so that we can get his NEDBANK account number .. that is the only one we still need to close off his shenanigans altogether. We have the ABSA as well as the FNB account numbers - we just need that Nedbank account number and we are one up on him.

  • Unknown 25 Feb 2010, 03:40 PM

I received a call from 072 427 2693 today (25-Feb) asking to speak with my domestic. I said "I am her" & he put the fone down!! I think I took the wind right out of his sails!!

  • Unknown 22 Feb 2010, 11:30 AM Kathy - I have lodged a complaint on about this scamming - I have also given them the account number - hopefully it will be in time to refund your mom's money. Remember and put the account numbers directly onto the web page under the bank concerned. Also remember to go and lay a charge of fraud at your police station - the banks cannot close the account without a case number from your police station. Get that to me quickly so that we can let ABSA know.

the same thing has just happened to my mother, we received a call from a guy this morning, claiming to be our domestic worker's brother. they said she had been in a car accident and was killed, and they needed R7000 to transport her body back to zimbabwe, where she is from. my mother only transferred R3500 to the account number, but when we phoned her husband a couple hours later to find out how he was, and he said she was fine, and sitting right next to him. apparently on friday men arrived at our complex gate and told her they were UIF, and that my mother had not been paying so they needed her phone number to sort it out. the phone call is from the same number posted above. unfortunately we think the money is gone, as it was a direct transfer. however if this helps, here are his account details : Account number : 924 014 2928 Account holder name : V. Nduli Account type : Savings Bank : Absa Bank Branch number : 6320005 These men need to be stopped, please can someone do something - we have tried the police from our side, but they are useless.

Hi Flip, If you have the NEDBANK and ABSA account numbers - please put them up here - I have laid a charge at the Police and they will put a hold on the account numbers if there is a fraud charge against them. Most urgent to get those account numbers so that no-one can deposit into those accounts. Luckily for me - someone in Cape Town had laid a charge with the FNB account number or they would have got my money. Thanks Jennifer

  • Unknown 15 Feb 2010, 06:23 AM

I also got scamed by the same number have his Nedbank account and Absa one same teephone number can't someone trace the number ????

  • Unknown 23 Jan 2010, 11:17 AM

James - I wish you had got his NEDBANK account number from him - there is a hold on the FNB account because a case has been opened at the Parkview Police Station as well as in Cape Town. If we can just get this NEDBANK account number - we can get a block put on that account as well. Anyone else getting phone calls ....get his banking details ... this way we can stop him ... !!

I was tested today (23rd Jan 2010) with this old scam coming from the number given above. I started scamming the scammer by entering into a dialog with him, but without divulging too much information. He was quick to use my name that I answered with as well as the name of my domestic, whose whereabouts I knew. He rang off when I pretended to co-operate and tried to glean information from him. Be warned!

  • Unknown 13 Jan 2010, 08:51 AM

It happened to me as well - I was lucky and did not transfer the money. You are right - no matter what anybody says, nothing can prepare you for when you get this phone call. I phoned the Douglasdale police station and were told that this is the 4th call that morning. They opened a docket as I had all the necessary information of the fraudster. Nothing happened thereafter .... I thus put security measures in place. My domestic takes messages and I will phone back - don't give information to anybody - not even Department of Labour staff (that's how they got all her personal information). I have telephone numbers of all her family members. I changed my telephone number and most of all - we are more alert.
