Domestic worker dumping newborn in trash

A domestic worker was arrested for dumping her newborn baby in a rubbish bin in Umhlanga on Monday morning, Durban Metro police said. "People collecting refuse found the newborn baby in a black plastic bag," said Superintendent Joyce Khuzwayo. "They immediately called the police and the baby was rushed to hospital." Khuzwayo said police went to the house were the baby was found and arrested the domestic worker. The baby was about an hour old when she was discovered. The umbilical cord was also still intact. Khuzwayo said the woman was about nine months pregnant with the baby, when she allegedly tried to abort the child. Khuzwayo said the woman told police that she was given a pill that induced labour. Police were searching for the person who supplied the abortion drugs to the woman. The woman is due to appear at the Verulam Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.-Sapa
