A 74-year-old man was arrested in
Balfour on Wednesday after a
police officer caught him killing his neighbour's dog with a metal
rod, Mpumalanga said.
Colonel Abie Khoabane was coming out of a church in Siyathemba
around 1pm when he heard a "heart-breaking" noise that sounded like
a crying dog, spokesperson Sergeant Sam Tshabalala said.
"He went to investigate the sound and found a dog lying on it's
side, bleeding," he said.
Kneeling next to the dog was the elderly man, allegedly pushing
a long steel rod into the dog's body.
"The man saw Colonel Khoabane approaching and quickly pulled the
spear out of the dog's body and tried to walk away."
He was arrested and confessed that he had killed the dog as a
favour to his 54-year-old neighbour, who was angry that the dog had
eaten three of his chickens. The 54-year-old man was also arrested.
The two were charged with animal cruelty and would appear in the
Magistrate's Court on Thursday.
"Cruelty to animals is a very serious crime and is not
acceptable... in the eyes of the law," Khoabane told Tshabalala
