The Incident |
|
The Krugersdorp Game Reserve tragically lost its last adult White Rhino to poachers on 14 July 2010. The female rhino was darted from an unmarked helicopter and when she had succumbed to the effects of the drugs her horn was removed using a chainsaw.
The rhino bled to death leaving her eight month old male calf to wander off into the game reserve alone. The calf was located the next day and, accompanied by a wildlife veterinarian, the NSPCA Wildlife Unit helped the Krugersdorp Game Reserve manager to successfully tranquilise and move the young rhino into the safety of a boma on the property.
The Krugersdorp Game Reserve decided that for the rhino calf's safety and future wellbeing that the best decision was to move him to the Rhino and Lion Park in Kromdraai. The Rhino and Lion Park is close by and currently has other orphaned rhino calves of similar age.
