An advert for various fish tanks and accessories was placed on Gumtree by the scammer with the description saying that they were in perfect working order.I arranged with the guy who goes by the name of "Clive" or Calvin Spracklen to buy an Aqua Clear 300 filter that usually retails for R700 at a price of R180 from him (Yes, I should've known something was fishy) and we agreed to meet at the City View shopping centre in Durban on the 13 September at 12:15.
We met and I asked him if the product was in full working order to which he assured me that it was (The filter can't be tested unless it's in water) and that the only reason he was selling it was because he now has a smaller tank. I took his word for it and then paid him and was on my way. 1.5 hours later I arrived home and was going to clean the filter when I noticed that one of the impeller blades were broken, the piece that was broken was nowhere inside the filter leading me to believe that it was broken prior to me buying it. I immediately contacted Clive/Calvin via WhatsApp and this is the conversation we had on WhatsApp - He was going to clean and install the filter now but noticed that one of the spokes on the impeller is missing/broken 14:25, 13 Sep - Clive/Calvin: Ahhh my bro I honestly didnt even notice that if I did I wud hav mentioned it cuz14:27, 13 Sep - Me: Can I return it? Because it's of no use to me if it's not going to work 100%. He then blocked me on WhatsApp so I proceeded to call him, he denied blocking me and said that he didn't know the filter was broken. Furthermore he refuses to give me a refund saying I should have inspected the item before buying. This guy has no conscience or ethics and just feeds on the trust of innocent people.
