A pet owner in Mpumalanga reportedly cut off his dog's hind legs after she took food from a neighbour, according to Beeld.
Owner Alfred Maganzi, a Mozambican living in a squatter camp outside Sabie, reportedly left the injured animal behind his shack for a week.
"It made me sick and I was shocked when I saw this animal," Sabie SPCA inspector Petro Oosthuizen told Beeld after being called to the scene by worried residents.
"She was very weak, dehydrated and completely disorientated when I got to her at the hut.
"When I asked her owner why he had chopped off her legs, he told me initially to ask the dog."
The female dog was transported to a vet, who made the decision to put it down, in Mbombela.
"The animal was in shock and the wounds to her paws had started becoming septic," said SPCA chairperson in Mbombela, Estelle de Villiers.
The 65-year-old Maganzi, who has since had a charge of animal cruelty laid against him, eventually admitted that he chopped off his pet's back legs.
"Now she can't run about anymore and she won't steal anymore," Maganzi reportedly told Oosthuizen, according to Beeld.
