My partner and I had recently rented a cottage on a smallholding in Timsrand and had only been there for a month and a half before the incident took place.
On the morning of the 17 November at 4 am we were alerted to activity by our jack russel, We were in bed, naturally, and not prepared for what happened next. With the light on we were listening for noises and heard something that sounded like it was outside shortly followed by another sound, this time we knew it was inside. as we looked towards the bedroom door it was opening slowly and we saw a gun being pointed towards us as the guy was coming through the door. It was only his hand and gun at this point. I immediately jumped up and rushed the door to push him out. I used my right shoulder to push against the door and dropped to my knees while doing this. It was then while his hand was caught in the door that he opened fire. Both my partner and I were shot at this time. I was shot in the back and she was shot through her left arm. she was standing on the other side of the bed. I reached for my gun, which was only about a meter and a half away and started to fire back. All in all 28 shots were fired between us before he or they then fled. Nothing was taken by the intruders at that time. We managed to get ourselves to the hospital and were treated there for our wounds. When we returned to the property on the 22nd we were shocked to find that between the police, security company and repairmen form the insurance company a number of items had been stolen including cash that we had in our bedside draws. I am disgusted at the fact that while we were in hospital the very people who are meant to assist you could do such a thing.
The Miracle is that neither my partner or I have sustained any permanent damage other than psychologically. We do need adequate counseling but this doesn't seem to exist in South Africa.
