Chaos erupted at the ANC's 99th anniversary celebrations in Mthatha on Saturday when people started grabbing sponsored umbrellas and T-shirts that were meant to be handed out to members.
A Sapa reporter on the scene said a group of young adults and local community members from Mthatha stormed the Rotary stadium and started grabbing the items before officials could even start handing them out to people.
Thousands of people wearing yellow ANC T-shirts converged as buses and taxi's offloaded them. "Give us free T-shirts and free umbrellas for sun," shouted many ANC supporters.
Within moments ANC marshals from all around the stadium were overpowered by the crowd and supporters and community members from Mthatha took off with the free T-shirts and umbrellas, with some of them going back to the nearby townships of Mbuqe and Khwezi.
During this time the formal program came to a standstill and within minutes members of the Umkhonto We Sizwe military veterans were summoned to take control of the situation helped by some members of the SA police VIP protection unit.
Only a handful of umbrellas and T-shirts were reclaimed by the police. After the situation had been defused chairman of ANC Youth League in the Eastern Cape Ayanda Matiti addressed the crowd at the anniversary celebrations.
