A 12-year-old Mthatha girl was
killed by a stray bullet at a high school in the Eastern Cape on
Tuesday, police said.
"The girl was inside a classroom at the time, when a bullet hit her. She collapsed and died," Superintendent Mzukisi Fatyela said.
A 25-year-old man had entered the grounds of the Jongingaba Junior-Secondary School in rural Ngqeleni around midday and began speaking to a woman clerk outside one of the classrooms.
"They were a couple. The two began arguing and the man took out a firearm and began firing."
Two bullets struck the 30-year-old clerk - one in the upper body and one in the abdomen. A third bullet went through a window and struck the girl.
The gunman then left the school and attempted to kill another person.
"Members of the community caught the man, assaulted him with pangas and then shot him. The man collapsed and died at the scene."
The clerk was taken to a local hospital where she is in a serious condition. Police did not know what she and the gunman had been arguing about.
"We have not yet taken her statement. We will do so soon."
Police were on their way to the girl's family to tell them of her death.
