"We were recently alerted to the plight of a dog in Du Noon who had been severely burnt when someone threw boiling water on him as he lay snoozing one lazy afternoon.
He was not aggressive, he was not a threat and he posed no danger – harming him was a senseless act of wanton cruelty. He had beautiful, sparkly eyes (which he maintained even through his gruesome injury) and all he craved was love.
Yet someone saw the need to harm him and then still managed to continue with their life, watching him suffer, as he struggled to walk, as his wounds festered, as his skin blistered and burnt in the blazing heat...
Until someone finally saw fit to call us to help him. By the time we arrived, he was barely able to walk and was in extreme agony. Lifting him into our bakkie was a trauma for him.
But we did so gently and carefully. We would have loved to have given him a chance – to rehabilitate him and heal his wounds and take his pain away, but he had suffered for far too long and his journey to a possible full recovery would have been a long and painful one.
Finding a foster home who would have been prepared to give him the necessary care would have also proved almost impossible. And quite frankly, we didn’t feel he deserved to suffer a moment longer.
And so, with a hearty meal, a gentle caress, kind words, and a promise to find justice, we held his paw and sent him peacefully over the rainbow bridge.
RIP dear, beautiful boy – your suffering is over now."
