Good Day,I want to share our fraud story with you and hopefully you can warn your readers to be careful of scams that honestly seemed so legit. My husband and I along with many other people have fallen victim to a rental property scam in Midrand. It all started on the 14th July with an advert on Gumtree for a 3 bedroom house in Halfway Gardens for R 7000.00 per month. The advert said we should contact Jacobus. I sent a message via Gumtree as well as an sms. Jacobus replied to the sms and said the property was still available and we are welcome to view it. He sent me the phone number for his tenant Lesego. I set up a time for 3pm with her. My husband and I met with Lesego and viewed the property and were in awe at the beautiful house. Lesego said she lived there for 3 years and was very happy there. She was moving to go to Cape Town as her husband got a job there. All was so positive and wonderful . We decided to tell the owner we were interested.I contacted Jacobus to tell him we wanted to rent the property for 2 years. I also told him I had 5 dogs. I thought the dogs would put him off. He replied to me saying he had no problem with the dogs and added that he preferred that we wanted to rent the property for the 2 years. He said he did not want to sell so it suited him. He said he would send the contract the following day. When I received the contract, my husband and I went through it and were happy. The name and ID number matched and the contract was worded correctly. We signed and payed the total of R14000.00 to secure the lease. Jacobus wanted to meet with us on the 30th July to do a property inspection. We would get the keys the following day once he fixed any damage left by the tenant. Jacobus was very accommodating with answering any questions I had. Not once did I doubt this wonderful man.On the 30th July, I phoned Jacobus but got voicemail. I tried the whole day with no avail. I then decided to contact Lesego. Her phone was also off. I thought it may be due to the fact she was flying to Cape Town and her phone had to be switched off. I started worrying after 3 hours of trying her and Jacobus’ numbers. My husband then said we should take a drive to the house. On arrival, everything was lock up. We hooted, but got nothing. So we sat in the car and waited. Another car stopped and asked if we knew where the tenant was as they came to fetch the keys. I asked what they meant and was told they were moving in the following day. We were shocked to find out that they too had signed a lease and paid over money. We all decided to drive to Midrand Police station. Not the greatest experience as we were treated like criminals. A couple overheard us talking about 8 Barbet street and told us they too had been scammed. And then the people starting pouring in who too were scammed for the same house. With the help of one of the victims, we managed to trace the real Jacobus. I phoned him and was told that he too had laid a charge. Apparently his details were used in another fraudulent property scam in Garsfontein. And so our nightmare began. We started a Whatsapp group of victims and through that have managed to gather information pertaining to our case. Cops have been no help at all. Not once has a detective been out to the scene of the crime. No-one has been interviewed. We have not only lost money, but also gave notice to our current residences. Some found alternate accommodation and some we not so lucky. We gave up so much for this property and what did we get………………..heartache, anger etc. We just want to blow the cover on these criminals and warn others to prevent them from falling into the same trap. Please help us. I have a list of victims who need closure.Should you require any contact details of other victims, please do not hesitate to contact me. There are many.Thank you for taking the time to read our story.
