Hi guys, be ware of people posing as buyers from different government departments. Our office received a call from a lady claiming to work for the Department of transport.
They said they required us to quote them on 450 200watt floodlights-industrial series with the code WEG20 or WEGFL20. we did the math and realised the value of the order was in excess of R2 million rand. the government and its different departments is, by law, compelled to advertise publicly any tender which has a value in excess of a million rand (R1 Million).
we immediately realised there was something wrong. The flood lights they required are sold exclusively by a fictional, not existent company called Weerlig Group. based at the address http://weerliggroup.com/ 48 York Rd Port Elizabeth, 6001, South Africa.
We contacted them, they sent a mail asking how many floodlights we wanted. The name of the person who replied to enquiry was a Miss Karen (no last name) we asked her to provide a last name and a time we can go to the address stated on their site to view the product before making a purchase. She did not reply.
I think the idea they had was for us to transfer money to the fake company Weerlig Group for the flood lights, then they would have disappeared.
The fake number of the department of transport we were contacted with is 012 771 2644. It's important to note the following:
-The government does not issue RFQs for any project above R1 million. Those are advertised publicly as RFPs
-Look carefully at the number you are contacted by. Then do a simple google check of the official numbers of the department the RFQ is coming from. For instance the number the fraudsters called us with was 012 771 2644. A simple search showed us that the official Department of transport numbers have the first six digits 012 309 followed by the extensions of individuals.
Be aware for anything suspicious and do not abandon your gut feeling guys. We're all trying to make a living, times are hard and some people want to take advantage of honest people. Just be careful, take your time to do basic background checks before replying to any RFQ.
