Robber killed and Cop shot after shoot-out

A robber was killed and a police constable is in a critical condition after a shoot-out in Benoni on Thursday afternoon, Gauteng police said. Constable Godin Nyathi said 12 men entered a supermarket in Brakpan and held up staff and customers. They then fled in a minibus to Tamboville informal settlement in Benoni with an undisclosed amount of money. "Police officers on patrol spotted them and decided to give chase... as they approached the suspects, they were shot at... "One of the officers was shot in the chest and the other missed the bullets," Nyathi said. The shoot-out also resulted in a robber being shot in the head and killed. The alleged driver of the minibus, identified as a man in his late 70s, was arrested. The other robbers ran away. Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said the officer was critically wounded. "The officer, in his 20s, was stabilized and had to be placed on a manual ventilator at the scene," Botha said. He was then airlifted to the Netcare Union hospital for specialized treatment. "He is fighting for his life," he said.
