A Cape Flats man has allegedly been attacked and killed by a group of taxi drivers who claim he was trying to rob a passenger.
Mcedisi Phathiwe, 19, died minutes after an argument with a cockroach taxi driver in Lansdowne Road in Philippi on Saturday afternoon.
Cops confirmed he was also linked to a previous case where a taxi driver was robbed.
He died on the scene of multiple stab wounds.
Mcedisi's mother Lydia Phathiwe, 37, tells the Daily Voice that eyewitnesses went to tell her that her son was being attacked by a mob of taxi drivers.
"I was on my way to visit his [Mcedisi] girlfriend when someone came to tell me that my son was being attacked," says the distraught mother who was unaware that the woman was with Mcedisi.
"When I got to the scene, he was already dead. I couldn't believe what I was seeing.
"He just spoke to me and minutes later he was dead."
Lydia says people at the scene told her that Mcedisi had an argument with his girlfriend just before he was attacked.
Witnesses claim that the young man tried to stop his girlfriend from boarding the taxi.
"And when he tried to pull her out, the driver smacked him and the fight started. When he tried to fight back a group of taxi drivers attacked him," says Lydia.
"He tried to run away but they caught him and beat him up and one stabbed him."
Nyanga cops say no one has been arrested and police are investigating a case of murder and that Mcedisi was facing a charge of robbery at the time of his death.
