Unfortunately my mother fell for this scam and paid the R900. I called the number: 0762294680 from which the sms:
CONGRATS! YOU ARE A WINNER OF R350,000 FROM SELF - SERVICE ATM PROMO. REF: ZA34SS. TO CLAIM VISIT www.sssza.com / EMAIL- email@example.com / 0110501777. I called the number that sent the sms. The man insisted I put my reference number into the website. I also called this number: 0734387173 and told the man that they better return the full R900 to my mother. He got rude, said Im crazy and put the phone down. Now his phone is off. My mother also received an e-mail if a copy of a Abraham Carel Willemses ID. I have reported this to the Home Affairs. Unfortunately I cant obtain the information of these thieves from RICA but will do my best to open a case so that the matter gets investigated further so that justice may be brought upon the criminals.
Often, Scammers use this ploy to trick people into paying funds. Usually, when the Scammers discover that the victims fall prey to their requests, the fraudsters will elaborate greater tales conning many into providing larger amounts of money (by masquerading as a trustworthy entity).
These individuals often use non-traceable ways of communicating, such as public e-mail services and numbers.
I strongly suggest that you DO NOT send any funds nor disclose any personal information. Often, people are requested to "validate" his or her information, such as account login information (passwords), credit card information, ID number, birth date, etc. As you can see, this information would allow the unscrupulous to log into your account (such as your bank), or to steal your identity and divest you of funds.
