Blackberry SMS Scam

Received an sms stating I have won R250 000 in Blackberry 2012 Promo Draw. I was asked to call mrs Pumza on 0760761688.  I did so. She asked what the ref no was on sms.  She confirmed that I had won this prize.  All I needed to do was go and purchase airtime and phone her back with serial number in order to activate my prize.  My prize money would then be delivered to my address within 72 hours.

  • Mike40 19 Sep 2013, 07:50 AM

It would seem they are at it again, R950000.00 in prize money courtesy of Blackberry Africa. Most strange as I do not have a Blackberry. It is certainly time that our esteemed government takes action to prevent the fraudulent activity rife in SA.

Yet another sms on both my phones at a weekly basis. No is as follows: 0725312351 , 0823570917 a Anderson person. And then my other phone 0797065663 , 0720149869 a Randy Charles person. Don't let them take your money , don't even respond to any sms telling you have win some money or what what, unless you have enter a compitition that you KNOW of.

  • Grant7 11 Jun 2013, 09:59 AM

I also just got the sms CONGRATULATIONS YOUR SIM NUMBER HAVE(obvious alarm) WON R750,000 A BLACKBERRY PHONE IN THE BLACKBERRY AFRICA PROMO. REF NO BB4RSA CALL MR PERRY NOW ON 0747286947 TO CLAIM. I would also like to know how these criminals get our numbers and how is it that we have this RICA in place to supposedly protect us from exactly this sort of thing. These people surely get their sims without any effort and can clearly use them for such illegal activities. I would imagine that such blatant disregard for the purpose of RICA in the first place would be investigated. If there actually is anyone to conduct investigations of course.

  • John15 17 Apr 2013, 03:46 PM

I just received the same text "CONGRATULATION YOUR SIM NUMBER HAVE WON R750,000 + A BLACKBERRY PHONE IN THE BLACKBERRY AFRICA PROMO REF NO BB4... CALL MR PERRY NOW ON 0845242998 TO CLAIM." Apparently this Perry oke is calling from Cape Town... How do they get our numbers? Because the number I'm using now is still brand new (not even my mother has this number). Do we blame RICA for this?

  • sophia5 12 Apr 2013, 08:34 AM

This sms came from: 074 109 2247 and I'm suppose to contact Mr. Joe at 074 497 3356 - honestly I'm not even gonna waist a phone call on this. • Brian24 6 Dec 2012, 01:01 PM

I receiced such an SMS too this morning. Previously, my mom received it too, but it was apparently from Pepsi. She deligated her power to me to handle this so-called "have won promo", the people I spoke to must have really been professionals because each time I call I could find another person, even ladies, who will then take from where I left in a previous call. I was asked to send R500 vodacom voucher with the result that I could have the money sent to me. However, I was further requested to deposit R9000 something to a certain bank account. That's when I gave up. These guys said they were based in PE Mandela building if I remember and were responsible for receiving cash from outside The Republic. I think they are some group of fraud syndicates...

  • Julie7 12 Nov 2012, 09:16 AM

I just received the sms and was asked to buy R110 Vodacom airtime. I knew it was a scam but called anyway as was interested to know how they were playing this one. Obviously buying the airtime means money and if anybody decides to transfer money to them. I think if Blackberry was running something like this we would know about it. I just hate the fact that they have our numbers.

  • Lynn4 15 Oct 2012, 02:49 PM

my daughter received this sms on her phone, with a reference no. and a request to phone Mike on 0732968838. I called. He asked for my postal address or bank account details and asked how I prefer payment, by cheque or by transfer. I said Cheque. He then said, ok, your cheque for R250 000 as well as the phone will reach you within 6 hours from CAPE TOWN! I wasn't asked to do anything, or pay for anything, but seriously? Mike was a Nigerian, apparently in Black Berry Head Office in Cape Town. His English was so poor I could barely understand him. Does the Blackberry Company even realise what is going on?

  • Samad Osman 11 Oct 2012, 09:57 AM

I received the same message and was asked to purchase a Vodacom airtime to the value of R110 and call back with the serial number. @ Jacqueline I agree with you

  • Dume 15 Aug 2012, 07:22 PM

I have received an exactly the same message today. These criminals are really up to something.

  • Jacqueline3 31 Jul 2012, 02:56 PM

Also received the same sms this morning to contact Mrs Khaya on 0717707176. They asked me to buy airtime, which i refused to do. If you win a prize you shouldnt be buying anything

  • Karin3 31 Jul 2012, 09:48 AM

Received the same sms this morning, to contact Mrs Khaya. My husband works in the sms-advertising industry as an analyst and he says that they will claim the airtime voucher you purchase and re-sell it - that's how they get their money.

  • renee5 20 Jul 2012, 01:44 PM

i also received this exact mail. Called in and eventually were asked to pay in R2500 for transfer costs.

  • Joey7 12 Jul 2012, 03:29 PM

I also received an sms today, 12 July 2012. How do you suppose they benefit from this scam? Any ideas?
