In these cases, it is nearly impossible to track the person down. With regards to RICA, it's sadly a pointless system - one can buy a Rica-ed sim card for just R10 on a street corner - so there is no real way of tracking them down. Even with regards to the bank accounts - they are often opened with factitious details or sometimes unrelated person would open the account for a fee and simply hand over the ATM card and PIN number to the crooks.

I received an sms this morning after 6 o'clock. (NOKIA) CONGRATULATIONS!!! YOUR NO WAS AMONG THE LUCKY WINNERS ON THE NOKIA YEARLY PROMOTION. YOU WON, R250 000, REF NO. 010KP. CALL Claim Center ON 0765807952 FOR YOUR CASH PRICE AND TO ACTIVATE YOUR REF NO The message was received from 0792423369 I called and a person answered but the line was indistinct. I could not hear the guy properly. He asked me to buy airtime or R100.00 and sms the airtime pinnumber along with my bank details, name etc. to him. I said why must I buy airtime if I have a contract phone. I told him that I think this is a scam. He just kept on talking about activating the ref no. etc.etc. I asked him to send me all the details by email because I could not hear him clearly. I also asked him why the line was so unclear? He said he can email me the details, but I must sms my email address as well as my banking details etc.etc. to him. Then I knew it was a scam. I googled it and saw that it was indeed a scam. I sent him an ugly sms telling him that I gave his number to the police and that he is a SOB and that I hope the police catch him. I did not send him any details - not even my name. I am worried though that he can do something with my cellnumber because I sent him the sms.

  • Merci 12 Oct 2011, 09:57 AM

Just received an sms and was told that I won R165,000 in the Nokia yearly promotion. I had to call either Mrs Cleo or Mr Joe on 0839409847 (Mrs Cleo answered) had to give her the Ref number (XZ25RJ11Q) my region and call back in 2 minutes. When I asked why I should have to call her back, she just put the phone down. I did call back. She asked me if I wanted my check EFT's or delivered. I told her delivered and gave my address. She told me that her finance department would be contacting me to inform me what the couriering fees would be to have the check delivered. I asked her for her landline number which she supplied 0218139641 - I googled the number and there is no listing for it. Now if this was sincerely a Nokia Agency - it would be listed as a business number. Ironically when she told me that she was very busy and I should call her back - I told her, I just won R165,000 with you but you don't have time to speak to me... her response ... She put my call on hold! Does smell like mackerel or what?

  • Marion4 10 Oct 2011, 07:53 AM

It seems that these people don't give up. Everybody knows that economic times are tough. Thank goodness I have access to the internet to check our these scams. I received an sms from 0763394708 and should contact Miss Mandiswa on 0713352742. I must agree with Alli, I was also under the impression that one of the conditions of RICA was to avoid this kind of scam going on due to EVERY cell phone number has to be registered.

  • Alli 7 Oct 2011, 10:58 AM

I got the same sms this morning - R950,000. I immediately googled and came up with this site. What makes me curious is that surely now that all cell numbers are supposedly RICA'd these numbers should be traceable?

  • daka 7 Oct 2011, 07:09 AM

I received an sms on 07/10/2011: Congratulations! Your sim number has won R95.000.00 from the NOKIA YEARLY PROMOTION. Your claim and immediate fund transfer, contact your claim agent Mr.Williams on 0784378536. From 8am to 6pm.(Terms & Conditions Apply)

  • Mola 6 Oct 2011, 11:35 AM

I received an sms on 16/09/2011, informing me that my mobile number has won R950,000 and that I should call Mrs. Christabel Owen on 0791302421. I called her and she said that i should buy vodacom air time of R550, which I did. I gave her my credit card number to deposit the money into my account. I later receive an sms informing me that I should pay an amount of R4900 as tranfer and acceptance fees. I was advised to phone Dr. Harrison Jonas (Account Officer) at 0780512135 who will give me the bank deals where I have to deposit the money. I promised to pay it on 15/10/2011. I then decided to research the matter and thanks for seeing your comments. You have really saved me for losing further money on this scam. Ch

  • Thandi12 5 Oct 2011, 06:04 PM

I got an sms saying that I won R175 000 from Nokia promotion and a reference number for claiming the price and a contact person with her numbers. Then I call the person and ask her about the price she then told me that I should buy an airtime of R180 to activate the voucher and I did so then after buying the airtime I did sms the number to that number. Then a guy called Tonny called me and told me that I should deposit some money to an account so that they will send me a cheque and then I ask Tonny which bannk is he going to send the cheque to and he told me about world bank. Then I realised that something fishy was going up. Then I told him to give the bank details of which the name of the bank is not known and I told him to get off and I scare him by saying that he is speaking to a station commandor of one of the poloce staion in Gauteng, and the call was recorded the he dropped the call and never bother to call again. • Marcelle 5 Sep 2011, 12:36 PM

"Congratulations: your cell no won you R500.000 in 2011 Nokia promo. Ref No A60. Contact Mr. Ben @ 0787071364. and make sure your Ref No is activated." I called the guy and he answered, told me I should buy R220 airtime and call him back again. I did not buy it and will not call him. I called Nokia HQ who told me it is a scam. Total BS. Is the SAPS using RICA to catch these people?

  • Dalene 2 30 Aug 2011, 11:14 AM

I also received an SMS this morning stating that I have won R350,000 in the Nokia Yearly Promotion. My ref no was also 010KP the same as Maylene above. The no I had to call was 0712002461. I called and was told to call back in 5min. Checked out this site and definitely won't call back. You could clearly hear it was not official office that answered the first call.

  • Maylene 30 Aug 2011, 08:28 AM

I received an SMS early this morning stating that I have won R250000.00 in the Nokia Yearly promotion. My reference number is NO.010KP the number given for me to call is 0765807952. I have not called them as I had decided to check the website to inquire about Nokia Yearly Promotion and found that I'm not the only one who has received this SMS. If this a scam if so, why hasn't Nokia investigated into the matter and put an end to it as it's been going on for over a year now. Surely something can be done, what about the poor soles that don't have excess to the internet and are losing money to these people. Please investigate!!!!!

  • Mariette Dreyer 26 Aug 2011, 08:23 AM

I received an SMS early this morning that I have won R150000 in the Nokia Yearly promotion. My reference number was PSK 1619 and Ihad to talk to Mr Williams, phone number 071 238 2330. When I called I was told that I was the first caller and won the full amount. They said I had a choice either they would post a cheque to me or they could pay the money directly into my bank account. I did not want to give my bank details so was told to go and buy R110 Vodacom airtime, not charge it on my phone, SMS the pin number and address details to them so that they can post a cheque. I called a friend, she gave the same reference and information and was told exactly the same. This is a scam. Please investigate!

  • Tamari 25 Aug 2011, 11:23 AM

Eish thanks to this almost parted with a lot of money was told to deposit R2 510.00 for transfer charges. Do you think they will hack my bank account. The authorities should get them before its too late.

  • Tracey12 25 Aug 2011, 11:16 AM

I too won R250,000. I recieved a sms saying congratulations! Your mobile number has won R250,000 In the Nokia years promotions. With ticket number NKZA2583. Call Mr Charles Goma on 083 995 4041 but yet it was sent from 079 263 3714. This was sent on the 24 August 2011 at 23:54. Yeah right, the CPA does not allow any company to notify or contact clients after hours and I know if I had won something then I would have known about entering any competition, and besides they would contact you not sms you. Do these people think we are stupid???

  • Fox Mulder 24 Aug 2011, 05:22 PM

So much for all the RICA hype and bravado!!! These scammers should have been caught long ago already. Where is RICA? Anyway I also received a mickey-mouse scam sms as follows: "Congratulations! You have just won R165,000 from NOKIA YEARLY PROMOTION, Ticket No. 8107. To claim your money, please contact Mrs Lebo Khumalo now on 0765018700 From: +27763182304 1:02pm 24-AUG-11" I also dont even have a Nokia phone and never entered for any such competition! I have not responded to this nonsense. All BS! I do believe one can back trace any cellphone numbers globaly with the appropriate software. Strange that NOKIA has not done anything about these scams, its their good name after all. At this point in SA everyone must wise up and take note of being scammed, tricked, mugged, conned, etc. Be wide awake, expect the worst and hope for the best. Be prepared. Trust no one. Always check online first. Caveat Emptor. The truth is out there.

  • Unknown 24 Aug 2011, 10:23 AM

  • Averil 23 Aug 2011, 08:32 AM

I received a SMS at 4.20 a.m. saying that I had won R95,000 and I must contact Mr Williams. I contacted Mr Williams and asked him if this was a scam and he said no - somehow don't believe him. He said I must purchase R600 worth of Telkom air time in order for him to write out my cheque - not going to happen

  • Juliet2 22 Aug 2011, 09:24 PM

Hahahahaha, i got an sms @04:43AM, from cell no. 076 966 2643 saying that i won R150,000 in the nokia yearly promotion, Ref. No. 0029GP, and i should contact the agent Mr William Smith on 071 770 3679. I just wanted to confirm my suspicious. But why are these idiots not dealt with?????

  • ctm 16 Aug 2011, 09:18 AM

U know sometimes its shocking, i got the same sms last night and even my education and experience in the cooporate world did not save me,lol lol lol.Anyways, called the number,n u can immediately tell, the person knows nothing about the call centre, regulated disclosures are not made and there is not even a sound from the background so an at least be convinced its a call centre. She almost does not even know the steps to follow for u to claim the money.I feel sorry for them, and that's what i told them,U cannot run from the ONE who is always there:)lol, let me go back to my broke honest life:)

  • John2 12 Aug 2011, 12:20 PM

Lol, also got a message. R195,000 from the NOKIA UK PROMO, wonder what gave the scam away, the fact that I got the message on my iPhone and have not owned a Nokia in about 7 years OR the fact that it was a UK promo. Just a side note, I recall something about people charging cell calls to certain numbers at an exorbitant rate. Be careful, its probably best not to phone the number in the SMS, not even to mess with their heads as I love doing with scam artists.

  • Marliese 12 Aug 2011, 09:37 AM

I've also received this scam SMS this morning: From 071 164 6789, Nokia Yearly Promo, R450,000 (Lucky me! :)) and the number to contact "SA claims centre": 0717331585. I hope someone is trying to do something about these guys...

  • Nadeen 11 Aug 2011, 08:38 AM

I was awoken to the same SMS this morning. My ref is Yx2. To call a Mr Mike on 0733655638. How can this be going on for so long? what happened to "Revenge" the cop who said he would "Sort them out"? We need to get this sorted as too many people are going to get scammed. I only read a dozen or so comments but people have been scammed of their hard earned money. these guys are good. we need to stop them ASAP. Isn't there a company out there that would like to take this on? perhaps Lead SA could make an announcement so that people can become aware of the situation. Really this can't go on like this there are people that do not have access to Google to find out that this is a scam. Help those less fortunate. STOP THIS CRIME!!!!

  • Wessel4 11 Aug 2011, 07:13 AM

I have received my second sms in a few day's with the same story. How can we stop them?
