A 25-year-old man was killed by an angry crowd after he and another man tried to attack a family in Mashiding Village near Siyabuswa, Mpumalanga police said on Wednesday.
The two men, one armed with a gun, entered the yard at 8pm on Tuesday and held a 17-year-old girl at gunpoint while she took clothes off the line, said Constable Busi Mtshweni.
"It seemed the aim of the thugs was to rob the family. The armed man ran into the house while his accomplice held onto the teenager outside.
"After the 42-year-old father of the girl peeped through the window and saw what was happening outside, he hid in the passage and waited for the gunman.
"A big struggle ensued as they wrestled for the gun in the passage," said Mtshweni.
He said neighbours heard what was going on and went to help.
"The other man who was holding onto the girl outside ran away when he saw the crowd coming.
"His partner in crime was beaten by the crowd with their fists, stones and several objects," said Mtshweni.
The crowd dispersed when the police arrived.
The injured robber was taken to the Philadelphia Hospital where he was certified dead on arrival.
