Shootout at Mandela's House

Eyewitness News has learnt of a shootout at Zindzi Mandela's house in Athol on Sunday evening but no official case has been opened and police are refusing to release any details. Eyewitness News understands that three men armed with handguns and an R5 rifle held up Madiba's relatives in Zindzi's driveway in Athol at 6.30pm on Sunday evening. A bodyguard who was driving them back from the elderly statesman's birthday party opened fire and may have shot one of the suspects in the leg. The trio fled in a black vehicle. A car fitting the description and peppered with bullet holes matching the weapons was recovered by the West Rand Dog Unit in Honeydew the same evening. Curiously, eyewitnesses said men in suits, believed to be from the police's VIP Unit, arrived at the Athol house and removed bullet casings from the driveway and then vanished. Despite officers from several stations responding to the shooting, the VIP Unit undertook to open a case but that has not yet happened. Police spokespeople have been avoiding queries from Eyewitness News since Monday and are still yet to reveal any details, only saying an incident did occur. Eyewitness News
