Recd.sms yesterday saying I had won R250000in the Nokia promo. Had to call Had to contact Andrew o 0730631293. Did that and was told to send full name and address so cheque could be posted. Nxt message said I had to deposit R1499 for the courier to deliver cheque. Please confirm if this is a scam

my daughter received this sms, she replied and was required to pay a insurance deposit or R1990.00 in to a FNB account. S Ntuli. 62440616342. After which her prize money of R175000.00 would have been paid to her. 10 Min later the requested deposit was halfed. Luckely she contacted me before paying the requested deposit. now she is getting endless calls requesting the deposit. I have phoned the number provided the same Ref number she was given and the exact same story was given to me..... SCAM SCAM SCAM

I received an sms this morning saying "CONGRATULATIONS! Your mobile number has won R150,000 in the 2014 Nokia Global Promo. Ref no:0114SA for Help and Claims contactyour agent Mrs Sonia Owen on:0733199919". What I don't understand is the sender is 0714519872.

I also received a similar sms. What is the point of it? What are they trying to achieve? Do they hack you cellnumber once you have phone them or do you need to send them money before they send you your "prize"?

I was sent the very same message : Congratulations! Your number has won R180,000 from nokia global promotion, your ref/no 029GP. Contact the agent mrs David on 0737020484 for your prize. And when I called "Mr David" I asked him how did he get my number because I dont even have a nokia so y would they choose my number and he kept asking for the refrence number and I just keep asking him how did he get my number so he put the phone down in my ear

In these cases, it is nearly impossible to track the person down. With regards to RICA, it's sadly a pointless system - one can buy a Rica-ed sim card for just R10 on a street corner - so there is no real way of tracking them down. Even with regards to the bank accounts - they are often opened with factitious details or sometimes unrelated person would open the account for a fee and simply hand over the ATM card and PIN number to the crooks.
