The occupants of a Raisethorpe home, in Pietermaritzburg, had a situation of domestic violence during which family members and were throwing bricks at each other as well as using foul language in public and around young children and babies. The fight occurred on the road outside the occupants yard which lasted for approximately 30 minutes.
During this time 2 occupants were asked to leave the property with their belongings and 2 birds, one being a species of Conure and the other a juvenile African Grey. In much rage one of the persons who had been fighting (him not being any of the owners) removed a pocket knife from his pocket and proceeded to stab the African Grey in its stomach/crop. Thereafter he threw it onto the road. As a result the bird now has a hole in its stomach with blood and food escaping and a right leg that has been twisted, due to being thrown. The leg is now at a 90 degree angle to what is supposed to be its normal position.
The owners did not look for the bird or realize that it was picked up from the road. I proceeded to take it to the SPCA in a well aerated box after calling the after hours contact number. The male I spoke to did not meet me at the SPCA as planned and asked me to leave it in a cage alongside the main gates. I did not do this as it was very cold which would have allowed room for the cut to become infected and there would have been nobody to monitor the bird through the night. The parrot has been taken to the SPCA once again this morning as it surprisingly survived the night.
Its care is now in the hands of the SPCA who i hope will take good care of it or can find a safe home for it.
