A 28-year-old police constable has been arrested for rape in Bethlehem,
A spokesman for the Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD), Moses Dlamini, said on Wednesday that the policeman also faced a charge of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.
Dlamini said a 30-year-old woman from Ficksburg had accused the policeman of raping and assaulting her at 2am on February 14 while she was on her way to find her boyfriend to ask him for his house keys.
She claimed that the constable, who was in an unmarked vehicle, had warned her about walking alone in the street in the early hours and then offered to help her find her boyfriend. She accepted.
He then offered to drive her to the Bethlehem city centre to phone her boyfriend, explaining that the public phones in the area did not take coins.
She soon realised he was not driving in the right direction. When she asked him where he was going, he stopped in an open field near a scrap yard, between the Boshokong township and Bethlehem, and sprayed her with pepper spray.
She escaped when the policeman got out of the vehicle to urinate on the side of the road, but he caught her, hit her on the back of her head and dragged her back to the vehicle, where he raped her.
He threatened to kill her if she told anyone.
The constable then took the woman to the home of her boyfriend, who was there.
An ICD investigator arrested the constable on Tuesday.
Dlamini said the constable was expected to bring a bail application in the Bethlehem Magistrate's Court on Thursday. The ICD intended opposing the application.
