A 17-year-old girl was gang-raped and further assaulted by six men at the Magogong Village in Taung, North West police said on Sunday.
Sergeant Kelebogile Moiloa said a 21-year-old man who knew the girl was arrested on Saturday following the attack, which happened in a bushy area in the Dipitshing section around 2.30pm on Friday.
She said the six men also tried to cut the teenager's throat but she sustained only a minor injury.
The minor was walking alone when she was approached by the 21-year-old, who asked for her phone. When she told him she did not have one, the man replied that she must pay him whatever money she had.
"The minor did not suspect anything and kept on walking," said Moiloa.
"While she was walking, five men approached her from the back."
According to information received, each man had a knife. They forcefully undressed her before raping her.
"The guy who was familiar to her went back to her and [again] repeatedly raped her."
It was alleged that one of the men cut her throat with a knife. He also tied her hands behind her back and to a tree.
"The minor was then left helplessly in pain with her hands tied at the back until a passerby came to her rescue by taking her to Taung District Hospital for medical treatment."
Moiloa said the matter was reported to the police and the minor identified the man she knew.
He was expected to appear in the Taung Magistrate's Court on Monday.
Further investigations would continue, said Moiloa.
