An 11-month-old baby from Southfield has been raped and a 42-year-old man, a family friend who was left in charge to take care of her, arrested.
The case has horrified even hardened police officers who have been offered trauma counselling to help them cope.
On Sunday, the Diep River police station's spokesman, Keith Chandler, said that late on Saturday doctors at the Red Cross Children's Hospital had confirmed the girl's vagina and anus had been penetrated.
He said the incident had happened earlier on Saturday when the girl's mother had left her in the care of her friend.
"When she returned, she noticed the child was in some discomfort, and when she changed the nappy she made the horrifying discovery of blood and a torn vagina."
The mother had immediately called police, and when they arrived they arrested the friend. He is expected to appear in the Wynberg Sexual Offences Court by Tuesday.
Chandler said while officers "had the shocking task of opening a case of rape", the baby had been taken to hospital, where she was treated. "Doctors confirmed she was raped on both sides, front and back."
She was discharged later on Saturday and it did not appear as if she had needed, or would need, any surgery.
